With arrows fired from an archery weapon, archery can be traced back as far as the Stone Age 20,000 years ago, and has been used by many peoples throughout history for hunting and military purposes. Ancient Egyptians, Attila's hordes, Persians, and Pathians all used archery.

More than 3000 participants were involved in the first recorded archery tournament in Finsbury, England (now London), which began the practice of the art and led to tournaments. Although the advent of firearms made archery obsolete as a weapon of war, it remained popular as a recreational activity, with competitions held around the world on a regular basis. First included as an Olympic sport for men and women, archery was reintroduced in 1972, and since then it has been a constant presence at the Games – one of the first sports for women to compete in.
