Tennis originally evolved from a game called "tennis solo practice," which dates back to 12th century France. The early version of tennis was played indoors on a court similar to an indoor tennis hall today, but with walls used as part of the game. The surface was typically made of stone or other hard materials. As the game evolved and moved outdoors, the surfaces changed as well. The modern game of lawn tennis, from which contemporary tennis derives, was first played on grass courts. Today, tennis is played on a variety of surfaces, including clay, hardcourt, and grass, each offering different characteristics that affect the game's speed and style.
